Russia launched a drone strike on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early on Wednesday, wounding at least six people and damaging buildings in two districts, city officials said. Explosions boomed across the morning sky as Ukraine's air force warned of drones approaching the city and Mayor Vitali Klitschko said air defences were repelling an enemy attack.

At least one person was killed and several Nato embassies damaged by a Russian strike on central Kyiv on Friday, as the Kremlin begins targeting what it says are Ukrainian “decision-making centres”.

Ukraine's Air Force has said that there was a threat of a Russian ballistic missile strike on Kyiv and several other parts of Ukraine from the northeast on the night of 30-31 December, and air defence had been activated in Kyiv.
