This morning, I spent 15 minutes on the phone with ChatGPT. You probably know by now that OpenAI released the ability to dial 1-800-ChatGPT to interact with the chatbot via voice call. And, so, for your sake, after my kids left for school, I sat down and made a phone call.
Offering a free phone service to collect voice data is a tried-and-true Silicon Valley technique pioneered by Google.
How does it work? ChatGPT now has its own phone number (1-800-242-8478), allowing you to add and message it on WhatsApp, where the bot has a verified business account. If you want to save it to your contacts, tap the plus icon at the top of the chats tab and tap “new contact”.
Most notably, there’s co-founder Elon Musk, who now runs rival startup xAI, and is in the midst of a heated legal battle with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
