The extreme cold weather in Metro Detroit has led to increased health issues. Henry Ford and Corewell health systems both reported that they’re seeing slip and falls, frostbite, and hypothermia cases. The Detroit Medical Center has reported the same, but also burn injuries from fires used for warmth.

A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect until 12 p.m. today. Wind chills will be -15° to -25° this morning. Frostbite can happen in less than 30 minutes during this time.

The cold temperatures outside prove especially challenging for pets that spend much of their time outdoors. Members of Detroit Dog Aide, an organization that provides medical care and pet supplies, say they find pets exposed to the elements in dangerous conditions every year.

On Tuesday, the Detroit Dog Rescue showed up to a home where a German Shepard puppy was kept inside with their parents left outside in the cold. The temperature was 3 degrees, feels like -10 degrees.
