The Met Office has issued fresh warnings for snow and ice as temperatures are set to plummet to -16C in parts of the UK, with the cold weather expected to continue for the next few weeks

Surfaces were left wet and cold following Wednesday's rain and snow, potentially causing dangerous icy conditions on roads, pavements and cycle paths, the Met Office has warned

Temperatures will climb to 0C by late morning in most areas, but that figure will only be reached by 1pm in Oldham, according to the Met Office. Highs of 3C are expected in Wigan, 2C in most of Greater Manchester and 1C in Oldham.

Following rain and snow, many cold wet surfaces are likely to freeze later tonight, producing icy conditions in places.

The Met Office warned sleet and snow is expected to continue this afternoon and evening as they issued the rare amber alert - as much as four inches (10cm) of snow is expected in the affected region

A rare amber warning for snow has been issued across Devon and Cornwall with immediate effect. Snow has fallen across large parts of the region, including Dartmoor, forcing some schools to close and road restrictions on the A38 motorway. A yellow weather warning was already in place for the South West but the Met Office has since upgraded this.

Another weather warning for snow and ice has been issued for North Wales, as the freezing temperatures continue. The latest 9 hour yellow alert starts at 3am tomorrow (Thursday) and lasts until midday, covering Wrexham, Flintshire, Denbighshire, Conwy, Gwynedd and Anglesey.

The Met Office urges people to leave extra time to make required trips and plan routes carefully.
