A succession of recent storms, including Storm Herminia, have caused severe flooding in western France. Residents have been forced to leave their homes by boat and helicopter. In Rennes, one of the worst affected places, around 400 people were taken to safety. The city's mayor said it was the most severe flooding in more than four decades.

France placed swathes of Brittany in the west of the country on red weather alert Monday as a violent storm brought flood levels not seen in decades.

Homes and streets were flooded in western France on Monday, after Storm Herminia brought heavy rainfall to the region. Neighbourhoods were underwater in the towns of Le Pont Rean and Guipry-Messac, with residents working to protect their homes from the flooding and salvage what belongings they could.
